Reg Wild Remembered - Monday 23rd January 2012.

Following the sad death of Reg Wild in 2011, his widow Jean has agreed to present an Annual 'Reg Wild Memorial Shield' to the first boy and the first girl from Hastings Athletic Club, to finish the Saga Sponsored Hastings Half Marathon Mini-Run, starting with this year's Event on March 25th.
Reg was involved with the Half Marathon from the very beginning 28 years ago, and Sponsored The Mini-Run for 11-16 ages for 15 years. His work with youngsters at H.A.C. was outstanding, and it is for these reasons that Jean would like to make this award in Memory of Reg.
Jean would also like anyone raising funds for a needy cause to consider Her chosen Charity -'Friends thru Cancer', which She has found to be a great support during and after Reg had gone. They can be contacted at email friendsthrucancer@sky.com
Entries for the Mini-Run are now open, and can either fill in an entry form (available at Sport Centres and Shops) or enter 'online' at www.hastings-half.co.uk
There is a limit of 200 for the Mini-Run, and entries are not accepted on
Race Morning, so it is advisable to enter as soon as possible.

In the latest edition of the World's best selling running magazine -Runners World

The Hastings Half Marathon was chosen as The Greatest Racing Day Out, as voted by readers.

In a changed system of voting for various aspects, Hastings be came number one in this category.

In many previous years the Hastings event has been voted the best in the UK.

In the write up on being number one, the citation said “A Staple of the
British racing calendar, Hastings is packed with excited spring marathon runners, and the varied course is lined by cheering crowds, just the thing to push you up the early uphill part of the course. There is even a special train from London, free park & ride for motorists, and a free Crèche to go with the quality free program and famous 'Hastings' brass award to all finishers.”

The 27th Hastings Half Marathon. Sunday 20th March 2011.

On a wonderful sunny and windless Day at Hastings, the return of The Kenyan's
was too much for the best of the UK Athletes.

Gordon Mugi(Kenya) was always in charge at the front of the Men's Race, but
only won by 18 seconds from Ethiopian challenger Seyoum Nigussie in a time
of 68 minutes. Third place was hotly contested by Orlando Edwards and Mike
Coleman, with Edwards prevailing by four seconds over his rival. Tom Collins
was 5th and Martin Cox 6th.

The Ladies race was a real battle between Kenyan Rebby Koech, and Lucy
McAllister(Brstol and West) with Koech pulling away to win by 37 seconds in
a time of 1:15:13

Kiditz Yichenku(Ethiopia) was third, with Amy Chalk(Bristol & West) 4th.

The remarkable Clare Elms(Dulwich Runners) was 5th, setting yet another
record Masters time for Hastings, and Katy Moore(Brighton & Hove) 6th.

On a day of perfect weather conditions, there were lots of PB's and Masters
records, especially the ones of Clare Elms and Sally Musson.

With massive crowds all round the route, there was also a record number of
Spectators enjoying the Event.

Thousands of pounds will be raised for many Charities and needy causes.

Prize Giving Evening will be on Sunday 1st May, at The Azur.

The 2012 Hastings Half Marathon will be on Sunday 25th March 2012.

Runners to look out for on Race Day

Neil Sadler - Running 13 x Hastings Half Marathon's Sunday 20thMarch. Neil Sadler (Race No. 1313) will start his epic endurance feat at 1:30pm on Friday 18th March, from the start line of the Hastings Half Marathon in Sea Road, St.Leonards. He will run consecutively the Half Marathon route 13 times, finishing with the last one with the Official Race start at 10:30am on Sunday 20th March. He is raising money for the Oliver Curd Trust. You can contact him on 07976716280 before or during the run (day and night).

Andy Chadwick from Maidstone (Race No. 862) will be running the race running backwards (Reverse Running). He is looking for company and help to see him around the route.

Ashley Scrace is cycling from Sheffield to Hastings (300 miles) to raise funds for St.Michael's Hospice, and is aiming to finish at 2:00pm on the Half Marathon Finish Line.

Terry Avery (Race No. 3204) will be pushed and pulled around in his wheelchair, by his family and friends. Terry had a Stroke last year, and will be raising funds for The Stroke Association and The Irvine Unit at Bexhill, and the ARRCC day centre at Rye, to say thank you for their treatment of him.

Shaun Creasey (Race No. 3416) Golf Professional at Cooden Beach Golf Club, will be competing in the event for the 12th time, and showing that even Golfer's must be fit!

Dave Hinton (07794721789) will be sleeping out rough this week, and then running the Half Marathon on Sunday, to raise money and awareness for The Seaview Project.

A group of 20 local fire fighters will be pushing a Bed round the Route, to raise money for the High Dependency unit at Conquest Hospital, and MacMillan Nurses. Apparently the bed has been modified with steering and brakes. They are the Red and White Watch at Hastings Fire Station. Contact Graham Greer (07817 433308)

£125,260.00 RAISED FOR NEEDY CAUSES.

At a packed Azur at the Marina, for the awards evening for this year's Half
Marathon, a record sum raised was announced of monies that had been
notified to the Hastings Lions Club so far. This is the first time in 26
years that the figure has gone over £100,000.

The Winner of the Dyer Charity Shield, for raising the most money for a
cause, was the Royal Mail Sales Team, who raised £6590 for The Oliver Curd
Trust.

This was part of a figure of £15,515 raised for The Trust, and St. Michael's
Hospice Runners had raised so far £18,400, and McMillan so far £4457.

Many more other needy causes benefited by the efforts of so many runners in
both the Half Marathon and The Mini-Run.

The Hastings Lions Club would like to congratulate everyone who contributed
towards raising this fantastic sum, and the Sponsors who donated over £2000
worth of prizes that were awarded on the evening.

The awards evening got of to a difficult start, with a coach of young
athletes late arriving back from a meeting at Guildford, guest presenter Tim
Hutchings flight being delayed from Manchester, and Hastings mayor Maureen
Charlesworth recovering from a twisted Back, but by amending the script the
ceremony proceeded well.

Amongst the awards were three 'Lifetime Awards'.

Tony Betley who has been with the Red Cross for the event for 26 years.

The drink station and Mini-Run baggage team of Doug Edwards and Reg Lower,
who have been supporting the event for 26 years.

The Cone Team of Reg Phillips, Jeff Coleman and Colin Mathis, who have been
carrying out their duties for 26 years.

Mike Scholes, freshly returned from The North Pole, being the first blind
person to trek a marathon to The Pole, received The Conquest Trophy, and was
interviewed by Presenter John Hollands.

The Oliver Curd Trust received a cheque for £500 from General Dynamics for
being the first charity team home.

There was a tremendous reception for a representative of 1st battalion The
Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, to receive their public Services Award.

And Neil Saddler received the Bo Peep special award for running the Half
Marathon route six times in succession.

The mayor of Hastings presented The Cinque Ports shield to the mayor of Rye.

Tim Hutchings did a great job handing over the prizes and awards, much to
the delight of the many reciprients.

But of course the big winners were needy causes.

The 'Half Marathon' Season culminates with the staging of the ever popular Hastings Half Marathon, which is organised by the Lions Club of Hastings, and ably assisted by Hastings A.C. and Hastings Runners.

Just perfect for finalising your training for the Brighton and London Marathons, as being a tough route, some say it is equivalent to running nearer 16 miles! The Fantastic Atmosphere and large crowds and entertainment around the Route gives the Runners good experience of a Big Event.

Many times voted The Best Half Marathon in The UK, due to it being a leader in innovation and giving value to runners, the Event keeps breaking new ground to keep it ahead of the Field.

New this year will be Texting all finishers automatically with their chip to chip times, within hours of the end of The Event. This is on top of sending all finishers a Photo Edition of the Hastings Observer, with all results and details. Since the Launch of the 2010 Entry Forms in September, entries have beenarriving above the usual level, and look like hitting the 1000 mark wellahead of Christmas.

All abilities are entering, and amongst the first entrants was a First TimeTeam from Bullers Wood School in Kent. James Fisher ran Hastings for thefirst time this year, and was so impressed with The Event, that he haspersuaded another 17 Staff from The School to join him in the 2010 HastingsHalf Marathon.
Another example is Jeff Alexandre from France, who in his own words states' I joined for the second the Half Marathon of Hastings because the route isnot monotonous, the public is warm, and the charming city. 1066 HASTINGS STEP RACE SUNDAY 11th October 2009.

Less than a month to go for the first Step Race of this kind in Hastings and
the South East (Maybe even the UK?). What is a Step Race? It derives from an American trend for 'Tower Running', which is where participants run up tower blocks. Already some Tower Races have occurred in UK, but this will be the first official Step Race. It takes place during Hastings Week -10th -18 October. The anniversary of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The East Hill Railway lift, over 100 years old, is currently being re-furbished, so the only way up to the top of the East Hill, and the fantastic views and Country Park, is up the 247 steps from winkle Island (Old Town Hastings). This makes an ideal venue for this new event. After reaching the top of the steps, the entrants carry along the top of East Hill, along High Wickham, Tackleway, Crown Lane and All Saints Street. The total distance is 1.066 miles. Participants will be set of in 30 second intervals. This is an exciting opportunity to be among the first people to take part in this new and different event, and you can go at what ever pace you wish, either walking or jogging or running. Kiplimo Kimutai Knocks three minutes of His 2008 time

The Sun came out, and with temperatures up to 18c, Kenyan Class act Kiplimo Kimutai (Kenya),

fought of the challenge of athletes from Burondi, Morocco, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and UK,

 to win for the second time in a row at Hastings, and in the process was over three minutes

 faster than his win in 2008. Mike Coleman, retained his Top UK position with another top five performance.

 The Ladies race was won by Caroline Hoyte (Sussex), but the biggest improver was Sarah Stradling

 (Essex) who finished 2nd, three places ahead of her 2008 position. Third was Claire Elms (Dulwich Runners),

 breaking the masters time for her age category. The biggest winner of course will be Charity,

 and a record entry, on such a fantastic Sunny Day, produced the highest number of finishers ever at Hastings.

British Touring Car team signs up for Hastings Half Marathon

British Touring Car team signs up for Hastings Half Marathon
Team RAC drivers get in shape for Brands Hatch season opener

Team RAC has announced that drivers Stephen Jelley and Colin Turkington will be taking part in this year’s Hastings Half Marathon on 15 March 2009.

The drivers will take on the 13.1 mile course in preparation for the 2009 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship season, which begins on 4/5 April at Brands Hatch in Kent.

26-year-old Jelley will be testing his fitness levels by tackling the course on foot, whilst team-mate and current Independent drivers’ champion Turkington will be offering his ‘support’ by leading the pack in Team RAC’s BMW320si race car.

Team RAC’s Stephen Jelley commented: “I’m really looking forward to competing in Hastings and it’s a great way to boost my fitness ahead of what’s sure to be another highly competitive season. Having Colin driving the marathon alongside me will be great support, although I doubt he’ll be getting out of first gear too often!”

Lots of sportsmen have competed in the half marathon and it’s great to see the motorsport community getting involved. Running the half marathon is a great way for Stephen to get fit ahead of the start of the BTCC season, and hopefully some of his fellow competitors will support him trackside at Brands Hatch in a couple of weeks’ time!”

The Hastings Half Marathon is organised by the Hastings Lions Club to raise money for charity. The course circumnavigates the ancient town of Hastings in East Sussex and attracts a field of over 5,000 competitors together with around 50,000 spectators.

The 25th Hastings Half Marathon, organised by the Hastings Lions Club, is
turning out to be one of the truly International Events in its History.

There will be World Class Athletes from Kenya, Burundi, Morocco, Ethiopia
and Australia, competing with Top UK Athletes.

But the Event is not all about Top Runners, it is about all entrants of all
abilities, doing their 'own thing'. From Charity Teams, like the Oliver Curd
Trust, with over 60 runners, who have already raised nearly £10,000, to
individuals who have their own personal challenge or reason.

There are two interesting battles between the first two men and first two
females in the Hastings Marathon in December, again going head to head.

Daniel Anderson and Julian Rendall have a revenge match, and Annabelle
Stearnes and Fi Powell will again battle to reverse the Marathon positions.

The Weather looks Good for Sunday, so come and see the Greatest Show In
Town.

Park your car and watch the race from any vantage point on the route. The
main A.21 and Battle Roads are open and not affected, and you can move
around within the Town. If you need to, start your car journey before
10.20a.m. or leave until after 1.p.m. please.

Also you can come to the Start/Finish area in West St.Leonards, or anywhere
along the Hastings Seafront and watch The World Go By.

Programmes will be available at various places and shops, and Information
centre.

Look out for the RAC British Touring Car Leading the Race, whilst one of the
Drivers-Stephen Jolly, will be actually running around the route.

Hastings is the place to be on Sunday.

Was it really 25 years ago?! An article by Derek Stevens.

The older you get the faster time moves away from you, and I just can't believe that the first Hastings Half Marathon took place a quarter of a century ago, although a quick glance at my waistline tells me that time has moved on!

Whilst I had won many races before, and was by then a regular member of the Great Britain Team, winning Hastings was something which perhaps gave me that little bit more credibility with local people than I had otherwise enjoyed, after all, the reality is that if you're not involved in a sport, then you can't really be expected to know who's doing what and how good or bad they are at it, so seeing the "local boy" come in first, perhaps made a few people realise that actually, I wasn't that bad at running after all.

Although I had been giving some "expert advice" to Eric and his team on the finer points relating to half marathons, my main interest was in running it and, hopefully winning. At the time, whilst we knew it was going to be a big race, I don't think anyone could have foreseen just how big it was to become, and how important a fixture it now is in the Great Britain racing calender, from small seeds great potatoes grow (a reference to Eric's former fame in the world of potatoes!).

Whilst it's normal to get nervous before a race, I can still recall the state I was in when we lined-up for the start,  whilst the field was not of the quality at the front that it is these days, there were some very good athletes taking part, most notably one of my good college friends, Kevin Johnston, a fellow international and winner of the Glasgow marathon, who had travelled all the way down from Newcastle for the express purpose of beating me.

So far as the race went, whilst I did break away from the field just before the top of Queensway, unlike other races where you can start to relax and get into a pattern, because this one was so important for me, I was never really able to "lean back and enjoy it", and I just continued to press hard all the way to the line, but I did enjoy the final two hundred yards (yes I was still working in imperial measures those days) and remember running down the right hand side of the road and saying hello to my wife Lesley and patting my daughter Sophie on the head on my way to the finish.

The race got some good coverage, thousands of local people took part, either running or supporting and its foundations were well and truly set. Clearly there were a lot of people who, having watched the event, then decided that they wanted to take part next time, because the entries for the second year shot-up, and I think gave the organisers a real taste of what they had let themselves in for, but it also signalled the arrival of a very important annual event for the area.

I guess the second year will perhaps be remembered not for the fact that I won it, but because my finish time was 0ne hour, six minutes and six seconds. I have to say that the significance of this didn't really dawn on me until I saw an article in the next days' Daily Telegraph headed "1066 and all that". I have been asked since then "did I slow down or speed-up just to get that time", the answer is  quite clear, when you've just run thirteen miles around one of the toughest half marathon courses there is, your only thought is about getting across the line and trying to get rid of the pain which seems to be in every joint and muscle you've got, and many you didn't know you had-yes, it hurts just as much at the front of the field as it does
everywhere else.

Whilst I took part in the race a few more times, unfortunately a very bad injury in 1986 put an end to my serious running career, but, I don't think that I've missed a race yet and have not felt, as a spectator, immense pleasure at this wonderful event.

So what has happened to it in these intervening 20 plus years, well quite obviously the standard at the front has become truly world class, mainly through the emergence in the late eighties and nineties of the brilliant African runners, who, together with some of our own great athletes (Paul Davis-Hale, Eammon Martin) have taken the course record to a time which in 1985 I just did not believe was possible. But the emergence of the African phenomenon, also seems to have marked the decline in the standard and quality of British distance running. In the 80's, Great Britain boasted the best marathon runners around, we held the world record, won Olympic bronze medal and could claim to have won virtually every major marathon race in the world, our best athletes of today, though, would have struggled to gain a minor international vest in those days, indeed it was only a few years ago that Paula Radcliff (OK the best female distance runner of all-time) was ranked as the third fastest marathon runner in the UK. I am most certainly not knocking our current batch, and in Dan Robinson and one or two of the new distance athletes, we have a real potential beginning to emerge, but clearly the depth is just not there anymore and one has to wonder why, when events like Hastings still attract thousands of competitors and should be part of a programme designed to foster our own 2012 Olympic Champion.

Indeed, despite the decline in standards at the top of the UK distance scene, the Hastings half marathon continues to go from strength to strength and as well as attracting a range of top class international athletes, has still managed to retain its "local feel", and it is really great to watch the thousands of local people running each year and most importantly raising many thousands of pounds for good causes. A running race that only serves to satisfy the needs of athletes, cannot be compared with one that does that, but which also raises funds and the aspirations of so many people, young and old.

As an athlete, you are totally focussed on winning, little if any thought goes into just what has to be done to promote a major event like Hastings, it is a massive undertaking and made even harder these days by our stringent health and safety rules. Whilst the winners of the half marathon are the people who run it and those who watch it, the heroes are the people who, behind the scenes, and on the day, ensure that everything that has to be done is done, that everything is in its' place, that every athlete is being cared for and that the disruption to those who have no interest in this foot race is kept to an absolute minimum. The team which Eric Hardwick has grown around him is  quite simply superb, and includes many who were there from the start in 1985, they deserve  huge thanks for all they do for
Hastings.

So far as the future is concerned, whilst my  mind says that I ought to get my pumps out and start training again, sadly my legs tell me otherwise and so I will continue to spectate each year, and I genuinely look forward to the day when another  local boy crosses the line first. One thing I do know for sure though, is that this race, which has affected the lives of so many people, will continue to provide the "agony and ecstasy" for our local long distance runners for many years to come, it is an integral part of our area and an important element  of distance running in the UK, long may it stay that way!

Five Weeks to Go!    This week we start sending out to entrants their Race Numbers, with full instructions and a Sponsor Form.  Take Care of your Race Number. It also has an electronic computer chip installed in it  So that we can produce a 'Chip to chip' time as well as 'Gun to finish time'  This is your own designated number, and must not be changed or given to anyone else.  If you have not already thought about, now is also the time to decide if you are going to raise any monies for a deserving cause. It is entirely optional to do this, but it gives you the opportunity of raising funds for a cause close to your heart. Or you can raise money for the Hastings Lions Club, who will distribute it over the year to needy causes. Top Female out of Event

Top Female out of Event.
Top UK International Birhan Dagne, former three times winner at Hastings, in
1998, 2006, 2007, is out of this year's Event through injury.
Birhan is suffering from a Ham String injury.
The Only Athlete to win at Hastings Three Times, loves coming to Hastings,
with all her family, and is very disappointed to miss out this year, after
losing Her Title last year to a Top Kenyan Athlete.
This will open up the Female Field for this year's 25th Event, and give
other UK Ladies a chance for Glory.
More news of Top Runners will become clear nearer to the Day.
Entries are flooding in at this time of the year and approaching 3000.
The Organisers, The Hastings Lions Club, have made arrangements that entries
will stay open as long as possible for this special Birthday Event, so that
as many as possible can take part for this Celebration Event on March 15th.

Mini Run for 11-16 age

Hastings Half Marathon -Mini Run for 11-16 age. Sunday 15th March 2009.
The Hastings Half Marathon Mini Run, Sponsored by Manor Insurance Services,
gives The Youngsters a chance to be involved in a Big Race Atmosphere.
Starting just West of Hastings Pier the 2.5k race comes along the last part
of the Half Marathon route, and finishes at the Half Marathon Finish Line.
It starts at 10.45a.m.,which enables the event to take place whilst the Half
Marathon Runners are going around their route.
There are medals for all finishers, and Awards for the first three boy and
girl in three age categories, plus School Team Awards(teams of four) for
boys and girls.
Awards will be given out at Awards Evening on Friday 17th April,2009, at the
Hastings Centre.
More and more youngsters are entering the Mini Run, who have parents taking
part in The Half Marathon, and will therefore qualify for the ABC Family
Nursery 'Parents Prize'. This is arrived at by adding the finishing
positions of the leading boy/girl to their leading parent.
Entrants can raise monies for their own particular needy cause or Charity.
There is a limit of 300 for the Min-Run, and NO entries can be accepted on
Race Morning. You have to enter in advance.

fit for 2009!

back into The Community.

25th Hastings Half Marathon Sunday 15th March 2009.

Entry Forms have now been launched for the eagerly awaited 25th Running of
the U.K.'s Favouite Half Marathon.

There will be a limit of 5000 for the Event, which is sure to be overbooked,
as runners come from all over the world to celebrate its 25th Birthday.

The Event Organisers, the Hastings Lions Club, would like to see as many of
the original runners from 1985 taking part again. In its first year there
were 1600 entrants

There are only 22 runners who have taken part in all 24 so far, which
includes only two ladies. And they are certain to be going for their own
25th!

The beauty of the Event, is that it is for ALL entrants. From Top
Internationals, Club Runners, Fun Runners, Charity Runners, and all ages
from 17 upwards.

Over the years the number of females taking part has grown from 10% of the
field to now over 40% of the Entry.

Any Charity or good cause can use the Event as a Springboard to raise funds
for their own Special Causes.

Hastings International Half Marathon Sunday 16th March 2008

On a cloudy day, but good running weather, and after the overnight rain,
Hastings was the place to be for the U.K.'s Top Half Marathon.

After a terrific battle between World Mountain Champion Runner Martin
Cox, who did the early work, the Kenyan Challenge, fresh from Altitude
Training, made good in the final three miles.

The ladies race was also a battle between the Kenyans and previous Hastings
Winner Birhan Dagne, with the stronger Kenyan  also coming out on top.

Charity Was also the Winner, with over £100,000 expected to be raised from
the Event, to benefit many needy causes.

HASTINGS 100th ANNIVERSARY MARATHON - 1908 -2008.

START/FINISH HASTINGS TOWN HALL, HASTINGS, EAST SUSSEX. U.K.

Just prior to the launch of the entry forms for The 24th Hastings Half Marathon, to take place on Sunday 16th March 2008, The organisers -Hastings Lions Club - are proud to announce a NEW and one and only event for Hastings, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Hastings 1908 Marathon.

Edward VII was on the throne, Asquith had just become Prime Minister, London Life was returning to normality after the Olympic Games had run for a record six months. The Great War was still six years away, and The Titanic had not yet sunk! In Hastings the appetite for sport had been well and truly whetted, and in December 1908 a remarkable marathon race was staged.

Covered shoulders and knee length drawers were essential attire for the 51 competitors, and local people turned out in vast numbers to cheer them on. The Start/Finish point was the central cricket ground (now Priory Meadow Shopping Centre) next to the Town Hall. The route took in the surrounding villages and towns of East Sussex, from Telham, Battle, Catsfield, Ninfield, Sidley, Bexhill,Cooden, Bulverhythe, St. Leonards on Sea and back to
Hastings.

A number of Olympic Runners took part, and the winner was W.T. Clarke of Sefton Harriers in 2hr. 37min. 16.8 seconds. Spectators were kept in touch by pigeon post. The event was sponsored by OXO, and the OXO vans accompanied the runners, carrying besides OXO, rice pudding, raisins, bananas, soda and milk stimulants, and 'Eau de Cologne with sponges in case of collapse.

The Hastings' M.P. Mr. Arthur du Cros fired the starting pistol, and also supplied and presented the Harvey du Cros to the first Hastings runner home - George White. The event was staged for the welfare of Hastings and the encouragement of two deserving bodies - Hastings Football Club and the Distress Committee for the relief of the unemployed. In 2008 the Hastings Lions Club are putting on the event to promote Hastings, and to raise monies for those less fortunate.
This will be a 'one and only chance' to take place in this unique Event, and interested parties can contact racedirector@hastings-half.co.uk or go to www.hastings-half.co.uk to register their interest both for taking part and for commercial sponsorship. Entry forms will be available, and 'online' entries in the New Year.
