British Touring Car team signs up for Hastings Half Marathon

British Touring Car team signs up for Hastings Half Marathon
Team RAC drivers get in shape for Brands Hatch season opener

Team RAC has announced that drivers Stephen Jelley and Colin Turkington will be taking part in this year’s Hastings Half Marathon on 15 March 2009.

The drivers will take on the 13.1 mile course in preparation for the 2009 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship season, which begins on 4/5 April at Brands Hatch in Kent.

26-year-old Jelley will be testing his fitness levels by tackling the course on foot, whilst team-mate and current Independent drivers’ champion Turkington will be offering his ‘support’ by leading the pack in Team RAC’s BMW320si race car.

Team RAC’s Stephen Jelley commented: “I’m really looking forward to competing in Hastings and it’s a great way to boost my fitness ahead of what’s sure to be another highly competitive season. Having Colin driving the marathon alongside me will be great support, although I doubt he’ll be getting out of first gear too often!”

Eric Hardwick MBE, Race Director for the Hastings Half Marathon, said: “It’s an honour to have Team RAC involved in the Hastings Half Marathon, especially as 2009 is the 25th anniversary of the event. Lots of sportsmen have competed in the half marathon and it’s great to see the motorsport community getting involved. Running the half marathon is a great way for Stephen to get fit ahead of the start of the BTCC season, and hopefully some of his fellow competitors will support him trackside at Brands Hatch in a couple of weeks’ time!”

The Hastings Half Marathon is organised by the Hastings Lions Club to raise money for charity. The course circumnavigates the ancient town of Hastings in East Sussex and attracts a field of over 5,000 competitors together with around 50,000 spectators.

Tickets for the opening round of the 2009 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch on 4/5 April are available from £23 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0870 950 9000 or visit www.brandshatch.co.uk.

'Now for The Special One'

The Half Marathon Running season is now building up to its climax, after
seeing good Events at Tunbridge Wells, Dover, Brighton and Eastbourne, with
less than two weeks to go to the 'Special One'
There is just something about the Hastings Half Marathon that has a special
place in the hearts of the running community. But why is this?
Is it the Incredible amount of Spectators around the route?
The Atmosphere with the Bands and vocal support?
Running in the same race as Top Internationals?
The Tingle when hearing 'Chariots of Fire ' at the start?
Being able to run for your own particular Charity or needy cause?
The number of Cheerful Marshalls around the route.
The Happy Scouts and Guides dispensing water etc.
The Hot Cup of Tea/Coffee at The Finish?
The Famous Hastings Brass?
The Fantastic Red Cross Cover?
The Challenge of being a Tough Route?
The increasing popular Free Creche(ABC Family Nursery)
The Park and Ride arrangements or the convenient Train Station.?
That ALL monies raised go back into the Community.
That it is well organised by the Hastings Lions Club?
Or is it just the Famous 'Hastings Fish and Chips' afterwards!
Whatever it is, come and experience 'The Hastings Experience'
